Right now, Apple’s up to the M3 models, which they claim are the fastest chipsets ever, not just for MacBooks, but for laptops in general. Whether that’s true depends on how you customize them. Benchmarks will show the processing speed compared with the RAM and other specs. But what if you have the M2 MacBooks from just a year ago? If you’re like me, you might be wondering, do I need to upgrade every year? Is that the process we have to follow now? The truth is, while the M3 models are technically faster, they’re not leaps and bounds ahead of the M2 models.

Just over a year ago, I bought an M2 Max MacBook Pro, the 16-inch version. This was a significant upgrade for me, as my previous 15-inch model, which I bought off Facebook Marketplace, had minimal storage and RAM. It wasn’t even a new model and had some wear and tear. Before that, I had a 17-inch MacBook Pro from 2012 and an old glossy white MacBook from my college days in 2005. So, getting the M2 Max new out of the box was a big deal for me. It made me think about whether I should be on an upgrade schedule every year or every couple of years to stay cutting-edge. But the answer really depends on what you’re using your MacBook for.

If you’re using it for gaming, a PC like Alienware might still be better, though Apple is improving their MacBooks for gaming too. For content creation, the M2 and M3 models are great, depending on the tier you choose. I went with the M2 Max, and it’s ahead of the M3 base model and even the M3 Pro. The real comparison comes between the M3 Max and the M2 Max. For most people, especially students or those using their MacBook for everyday tasks, the base models are just fine and more affordable. High-intensity users will need to spend more for the power they require. Personally, my M2 Max MacBook Pro has been my best purchase so far, even compared to my beloved 2012 17-inch model. It’s portable, powerful, and fits my needs perfectly.

Ultimately, whether to upgrade to an M3 model when you have an M2 comes down to what you need it for. Many people, including tech reviewers like Marcus Brownlee, are still satisfied with their M1 models and have skipped the M2 and M3 upgrades. If your current laptop meets your needs and performs well, there’s no rush to upgrade. It’s more about your experience and satisfaction than having the latest model. Investing in a good laptop should last you several years, not just one. So, take care of it, and it will serve you well.
