Brand New Supergirl TV Show Coming To CBS
Don’t call it the next Smallville, this new TV series looks to be exciting fans everywhere as it will be coming to a TV near you on CBS.
I was a child of the 80s and 90s, and back then any TV series that had a super hero was typically cheesy (anyone remember Lois and Clark or the 90’s tv series Flash?) or overly dramatic like an episode of Dawson’s Creek (i.e. Smallville).
It’s good to know that super hero shows are becoming more sophisticated and apparently are taking over television!
From Marvel we have Agents of Shield, Agent Carter and the new Netflix hit, Daredevil… but DC is still dominating the silver screen with greats like Arrow, Flash and now Supergirl.
WARNING: Potential spoilers ahead. If you have not watched the trailer and you wish to, scroll down to the video before reading the following synopsis.
The premise is based around the familiar mythos following Kara Zor-El, cousin of Kal El (Superman) as she is saved from the devastation of her home planet and sent to earth to live among humans.
Her story on earth takes place 12 years after her arrival as Kara, a young woman working for a seemingly mean spirited boss-lady until one eerie night she witnesses a friend trapped on a plane falling from the sky.
With all her gusto, she runs towards the falling aircraft, leaping several times into the air until she is completely airborne and saves the plane from a fatal crash.
The journey to don her blue-and-red threads and assume her heroic persona begins as she is apparently given the name “Supergirl” from a hashtag displayed on the news the following day.

What do you think?
For me, I’m digging it. I like the costume; It’s reminiscent to the old Supergirl movie from the late 80s. I also think the actress, Melissa Benoist, is a good fit.
I will say I’m not digging these two things: First, as good a fit as Melissa seems, from the trailer at least, she doesn’t give off that alien vibe… to the extent that Henry Cavill gave in Man of Steel. I don’t know.. but again, it’s only a trailer.
The other thing is…listen, I’m in an interracial marriage and I’m Puerto Rican myself so don’t throw the race card at me… I just think it’s very awkward to suddenly change the race of a character with no rhyme or reason. Jimmy Olsen’s black now? Really? I was a little thrown off when they made Perry White black in Man of Steel but Jimmy was white in the movie… and he’s black in the Supergirl TV show…
Let’s put it this way: Show Man of Steel to a kid and point out Jimmy Olsen.
Now show that same kid Supergirl and point out Jimmy Olsen again.
The kid’s gonna be pretty confused.
I’m still trying to deal with the new Fantastic Four reboot coming out where they made Johnny Storm black… Okay, why black? If we’re going to go this route, let’s try some other races, please???
*breathe, Jason… breathe*
Oh well. I’m sure they’ll do a pretty good job with this show. I’m looking forward to it and I’ll be setting my DVR for it when it premieres this fall on CBS!
